For this week's "Out & About" section, we decided to offer you a fishing report from the Cowlitz River in southern Washington. This is an extremely popular fishery and is typically full of steelhead this time of year. These steelhead are considered a "spring run" of fish and generally start showing in February while the run peaks in late March to mid April.
While February started out fairly slow and saw some small shots of fish in March, it seems the run has picked up slightly in the last week with some better results at the boat ramp. Danny Cook works at Wooldridge Boats and runs Capt. Cook's Guide Service part time. He spent the last few days on the Cowlitz and said the fish seemed to have finally made a showing. While not a big shot of fish made it back so far, at least there are enough in the river now to keep it somewhat exciting. The Capt.'s boat hooked into 4 and landed 3 on one day and hooked 6 and landed 3 the next day. The sunshine and warm weather was a bonus too especially since it was still March! Here are a few pics of the happy anglers with their catches.....
