Columbia River Springer's and a Hawg Quest

With great fishing reports coming in from the Columbia River, I had been dreaming of making it back down again this season.

So when the text came across from Glenn Hall, “Can you meet Andi and me in Portland next week with your boat to shoot a show?”

I went right into packing mode.

Fishing is always better when you have the right crowd of folks, and we did. Glenn Hall and his long time friend Shane made the trip from Southern Oregon, while I traveled down from Lake Stevens, WA with buddy and Shop manager Mario from Doug’s Outdoors in Woodinville.

We all ended up at the River Shore Inn,
located in Oregon City to meet up with the last member
of the group, Portland’s own loud & local, Andi “The Mad Russian”

With over 26 years of fishing the Portland area,
we figured that fishing with Andi surely provided us
with an advantage and yes, Andi delivered!

While the Mad Russian may be most famous for his egg cures, today we planned to do the down hill troll with flasher & herring.
His brine was colored up bright and had some serious odor going on, and I’m pretty sure that played a big role in our catch success.

Day one turned out just as I had hoped! We were back at the local Subway ordering up lunch by noon, going 6 for 9 to start things out.

Day two reminded us that conditions can change and persistence can make or break a slow day. Similar light morning showers followed by partly sunny skies slowed the bite a bit, and with a goal to get enough fish to make a show, our second day kept us on he water till nearly 8PM.

The hard work paid off as we ended up 4 for 5 on our final day.

In total, we went 9 for 14, and my 20’ Wooldridge Alaskan XL provided more then enough room and comfort for the entire crew while tackling the big waters of the Columbia River.

Keep an eye out for this show to air some time in either June or July. Hawg Quest is aired each Sunday and Wednesday on Fox Sports Northwest.
